When is the Best Time to Visit Victoria?
Short Answer: Summer is beautiful but fall through spring is when Victoria really shines. Visit during months September-May.
It rains on Vancouver Island for about 9 months out of the year and that goes true for Victoria. No lie, Victoria is beautiful during the summer. In the summer you’ll enjoy a warm breeze, bright and energetic ambience and many summer festivals you can attend. However, that’s also when the tourists flock into Victoria. You’ll experience crowds and pay premium prices due to tourists all cramming in to enjoy the 3 months of summer. However, summer isn’t really what Vancouver Island is known for and if you only aim to go during these months you’ll miss out on what makes Vancouver Island uniquely different and, indeed, what makes it beautiful.

June – August
This is peak summer in Victoria. Expect warm sunny weather and lots of crowds. Expect to pay a premium in accommodation. Did I mention crowds already? Mind you, the crowds aren’t as numerous as other major tourist destinations but there’s enough of them that it’s difficult to find places with no people unless you venture out into the rural areas of Vancouver Island or even in the northern parts of it. Victoria will be busy though, especially when the cruise ships dock downtown. However, all of that does not mean Victoria is not beautiful in the summer! The summer weather ranges about 15-25 degrees Celsius daily. There are many things to do around the city during these months. You can hike into the forests, like Mt. Doug or Mt. Tolmie, or drive to the summit if you don’t feel like hiking their trails. You can stroll down Dallas road or Beacon Hill Park, or better yet, visit Buchart Gardens over in Brentwood Bay. All of those activities are beautiful during the summer. But it can get cold in the evening still so make sure you pack a fleece or something light to wear at night.

September – November
This is fall for Victoria. During the fall Victoria is mild and mostly dry. The gardens, like Beacon Hill Park and our trails takes on an entirely different life of their own. Think orange and red trees, pumpkins, warm coffees and flannel with a very cozy vibe. The crowds are mostly gone, and you’ll experience a lot cheaper prices, especially in accommodations. The rainy season doesn’t really start until the end of November so this time of the year is one of the best time of the year to visit. I can’t really explain how beautiful Victoria is in the fall. December-February
This is Victoria’s full-blown winter season. Winters in Victoria isn’t what you’re expecting a Canadian winter would be like. Vancouver Island is one of the mildest places in Canada. It hardly ever snows in Victoria, and even if it does it only lasts a week max. Even then, it only happens in February usually. Because of that, snow is a rarity here and it usually shuts many of the city down. Think stores opening later (or not at all!) until the city clears the roads up. I usually stay home when it snows and will take the bus if I need to go anywhere for the day just because driving can be a hassle when the roads are not yet plowed,. One thing though is that it will rain during these months. A lot. It’s pretty cold but not it the negative double digits like some other major Canadian cities. The air will be crisp in the mornings and evenings so make sure you pack a waterproof jacket and you’ll have to dress in layers as it does warm up during the day. And just like the fall, Victoria winters give the city a different kind of vibe but cozy nonetheless. There’s also many Christmas festivals happening throughout the city, especially in downtown. Centennial Square, for example, turns into an amazing festival of light shows and carnival rides. Perfect for if you are planning to bring the whole family. Winter is by far my favorite time in Victoria and I highly recommend visiting then.

March-May
This Victoria’s Spring. Expect rain. Lots of rain. However, that does not mean that Victoria is any less beautiful! You’ll need to pack correctly to enjoy the spring. I’m thinking waterproof jackets and shoes. During these months you’ll experience foggy mornings and evenings which is absolutely beautiful to hike in if you’re dressed correctly. I usually go hiking in the mornings and then go to a rustic café downtown for breakfast or just coffee to relax the rest of the morning away. There isn’t much to do in terms of festivals during these months, so it’s mostly geared towards slower paced itineraries. Visit during these months if you don’t like crowds and hiking and driving in the rain. Check out my photo below!

- Absolutely. Everything is more expensive in Victoria during the summer but the warm weather and clear skies really bring the magic out of Victoria that you’ll only really see 3 months out of the year.

- What is the cheapest month to visit?
- I find October-March are the cheapest months. Accommodations will be about half of what you would pay during the summer months, depending on the neighborhood and style of accommodation you choose.

- Yes. I love Victoria during the winter. It has a very slow and cozy vibe.
